EPs (extended play) were extremely popular with record buyers. They contained either four or six songs, usually four. So much so, in fact, that there was an EP chart from 1960 to 1967 when sales declined and the chart ceased.

Cliff enjoyed huge success in the EP chart. Cliff's most successful EP was "Expresso Bongo". It was culled from Cliff's second film and contained: Love, A voice in the wilderness, The shrine on the second floor and Bongo Blues (The shadows).
Recorded in 1959, it achieved the virtual impossible. In 1960, it not only achieved topped the EP chart, it entered the singles chart and peaked at No.14! It enjoyed a 7 week run in the singles chart.

Within three months of release, "Expresso Bongo" had sold over 153,279 copies in mono and stereo. By the end of 1960, British sales were 178,138. It has since gone on to sell over a million copies, achieved from global sales-this truly was Cliff's biggest-selling EP.

In all, Cliff released 46 EP's, far more than any other artist. 23 of them charted.

Of the other: Five EP's were issued when there were no charts for them (three before the EP chart was introduced and two after it had been discontinued).

Although the majority of EP tracks were taken from LP's and film and stage sound-tracks, there are many songs that can only be heard on EP.

This makes them a must for any Cliff fan to add to their collection. But, be warned if buying them now. Many are not in good condition and many are over-priced!

Cliff's final EP, in May 1968 was "Congratulations" featuring all six songs for Europe from which the title song was chosen for the Eurovision Song Contest.

For Cliff record collectors, some EPs are still hard to find and many are extremely 'rare'. Most sell now from between £20 to £65, depending on condition, with 'mint' copies of "Hits from When in Rome" (1966) and "Thunderbirds are go!" (1966) now each selling for £70! "Cinderella" (1967) in 'mint' condition is worth £125!

As previously warned, because they are rare, many unscrupulous record dealers sell them at the highest price, in the poorest conditions.

I advise you to check all Cliff EPs before you buy. Remember, they are all now 40 years old!
