In October 1960, EMI announced that in his first two years, Cliff Richard had sold over five and a half million singles in Britain, an unprecedented feat.

At the end of the year, EMI chairman Sir Joseph Lockwood claimed that his company had a quarter of the global record market with Cliff Richard and the Shadows leading the new penetration of world markets by British artists.
By the end of 1963, Cliff had sold over 12 million records,
an 'unheard of' feat for a British artist.
